Change &
Continuity
P robably every crea tive person
has h a d to devise a tool— large
or sm all, sim ple or com plex— fo r
a specialpurpose. T ell us about
y o u r best in ven tion.
You might have noticed a different name
at the top of our masthead. Our dynamic
editor-in-chief, Andrew Wagner, has moved
on, but he left his mark on American Craft
during his two and a half years here. He led
the re-design and re-launch of the magazine,
set up a great website (americancraftmag.
org-do check it out!), and established new
contacts and programs. You’ll find him now
at
ReadyMade
magazine, still carrying
a torch for craft.
Janet Koplos, longtime editor at
A rt in
America
and co-author of the forthcoming
Makers: A History of American Studio Craft,
is stepping in as guest editor. The magazine
continues in Andrew’s mold, featuring in
this issue Kathy Erteman’s work on both the
design and studio sides of craft. The line
between design and craft has always been
blurred; in the 50s the popular term was
“designer-craftsman” and the supposition
was that the direct knowledge of materials
inherent to craft could contribute something
valuable to industrial production. Isn’t that
still true today?
We also introduce new elements that
build on our format and focus. “Voices”
asks a question-light or not-so-light-of a
variety of readers. “Considering.
..” is a col-
umn of ruminations on craft that will be
shared by essayist Akiko Busch, author of
The Uncommon Life of Common Objects
and
other titles, and craft historian Glenn Adam-
son, an editor of the scholarly
Journal o f
Modern Craft.
Adamson leads off in this
issue, and Busch’s first contribution will
appear in the October/November number.
Looking ahead: Probably every creative
person has had to devise a tool—large or
small, simple or complex—for a special pur-
pose. Send us a high-res digital image and
short caption, and we’ll feature a selection
of reports in a forthcoming issue.
We look forward to hearing from you.
